THE TERRITORY OF THE REGION

The Far-North region is located south of Lake Chad and borders the northern region to the south and the Republic of Chad to the east. It is also bordered by Adamawa and Borno states in the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the west.

The Far-North region covers an area of 3,4246 km2 with a population density of 91 inhabitants per km2. Known for its land rich in cereal crops (maize, comma, soya…) and cotton, the Far-North region offers a magnificent and splendid landscape with its picturesque mountains. The capital of the region is Maroua. This city also hosts the headquarters of the Far-North Regional Council. The Far-North Region has a Sahelian climate and receives an average of 700 mm of rain per year. It is an arid and very sunny region with temperatures of up to 45° in the shade during the dry season.

THE POPULATION

The population refers to all the people who live in a given territory. In Cameroon, the Far-North Region is one of the most populated with a population of approximately 3,111,792 inhabitants (2005).  It is a mosaic of ethnic groups that live in harmony and peace.

The main ethnic groups in the divisions are:

DIAMARE DIVISION ( Guizigas, Mofous, Peulhs, Moukou etc ), 

MAYO-SAVA DIVISION (Mouyans, Mada, Mandara, Zoulgo, Guemzek, Molko, Mouktele, Podoko, Kanouri, Kirdi etc

MAYO-TSANAGA DIVISION (Mafa, Kapsikis, Hide,Mabas, Bana, Djimi, Daba, Hina,Gadala, Tchouvouk, Charoua, Gadala)

MAYO-KANI DIVISION (Moundangs, Toupouris and Guizigas)

MAYO-DANAY DIVISION (Toupouris, Massas, Mousey, Mousgoums, Keras, Peuhls)

LOGONE AND CHARI DIVISION( Kotokos, Arabes Choas, Mousgoums )
